The Stays

The frame of the bodice consists of white silk rep and linen. Between these layers there are long, thin pieces of whale bone in channels sewn with backstitches. The silver fabric of the dress has subsequently been attached on the outside with stab-stitches and folded over the band. One of the temporary tackings from the dressmaking process is still in place. At the front, the lining is reinforced so as not wear out the skirt and for the comfort of the wearer.
