Hatt Couture

Hatt Couture is an exhibition about an imaginative accessory—the hat—worn by Swedish royals from the mid-20th century, the golden age of hats, to the 2000s.

For the first time, the Royal Armoury highlights and displays the museum’s royal hats – sophisticated, elegant, and glamorous turbans, pillbox hats, and berets. These have belonged to, among others, Queen Louise and Princesses Sibylla and Margaretha, and have been worn according to royal etiquette and in many well-known historical contexts.

The museum is also delighted to present an exclusive selection of royal hats worn by, and still owned by, Princess Christina and Princess Sofia. We are very proud to showcase a symphony of iconic, fashionable hats and headpieces from royal ceremonies where both princesses, through their style and personality, have more than once stolen the show.

A few elegant men’s hats are also featured from the Royal Armoury’s collections, such as Crown Prince Gustaf Adolf’s tall grey Derby hat and a Borsalino hat worn by the always well-dressed Gustaf V.

The exhibition also introduces us to some of the artists behind the hats—the milliners—who created them with exquisite craftsmanship and material choices, inspired by the latest fashion from Paris.

The hats testify to a time when hat fashion was characterized by high quality, playfulness, and creativity.

Try on a Hat

Visitors will recognize the royals from both 20th-century press and magazine photos and from contemporary images taken at royal christenings or other occasions where many of today’s hats have been worn. The exhibition also features a hands-on station.
